Frequently Asked Questions

English Language Editing Questions

Our editors are subject area experts with years of experience in research and scientific editing.

We have editors across every subject area ready to support you with your research. All are native English speakers and most have postgraduate-level qualifications.

Standard Editing includes correction of any spelling, grammar, punctuation, or word usage errors, but your editors will not improve the style or flow of your manuscript. Because of this limited editing scope, manuscripts submitted for Standard Editing are eligible to earn an editing certificate, but not guaranteed.

With Advanced Editing, our editors correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and word usage errors, plus improve sentences that sound awkward or unnatural. They also provide an editing summary with examples of the changes made with explanations to help you understand why the changes were made, which you can use to guide your writing in the future. Because this editing is so thorough, manuscripts submitted for Advanced manuscripts are guaranteed to receive an editing certificate.

With Premium Editing, you’ll receive the same thorough editing as the Advanced Editing option, and you receive additional editing support after peer review. Once you receive the reviewer comments on your manuscript, our editors will edit your responses and crosscheck them with your revised manuscript.

The Wiley Editing Certificate is a PDF certificate that you can provide to the journal when you submit your manuscript. This certificate confirms that your manuscript was edited by a native English speaker and is ready for journal submission, assuming all the changes we proposed are incorporated into the manuscript. It allows journal editors to feel confident that the English language in your manuscript has been reviewed and verified.

Manuscripts edited through our thorough Advanced and Premium Editing services are guaranteed to receive a Wiley Editing Certificate. Manuscripts submitted for Standard Editing are eligible to earn a certificate, but not guaranteed.

Acceptance decisions rest with the journal, so we are not able to guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted after using our services. However, we do guarantee that your manuscript will not be rejected for language reasons, assuming the changes we proposed are incorporated into the manuscript before submission to the journal.

If your manuscript is rejected for language reasons, we will re-edit your manuscript for free.

Multiple-Round Editing (MRE) support is an optional service we offer authors. With MRE, you can request re-editing of your document as many times as necessary to ensure your manuscript is completely submission-ready. MRE support is included for one year with our Advanced and Premium Editing services (except in cases where the manuscript has been heavily re-written or had new sections added). MRE support is discounted by 60% for one year with our Standard Editing service. Contact us to request an MRE.

Please e-mail us and include the version of your manuscript that you submitted to the journal and all of your reviewers’ comments. We will review your files and contact you with additional advice.

Yes, you can contact your editor, after your editing request is completed, using our Client Questions service to send any questions you have to your editor. You can find the ‘Client Questions’ feature by logging into your WES Online Account.

Manuscript Formatting Questions

Our formatting experts check each manuscript against your journal’s style guide. They adjust the citations, references, and layout of the document to the correct conventions. Figures and tables are moved to the correct location in the manuscript, and figure titles and legends are standardized to the specifications of your chosen journal.

Please note: we are not able to format legal references in Bluebook style at this time.

Yes, we correct your cited references for accuracy based on information in published databases. We also format them to comply with the journal’s guidelines and check the order your citations and references.

No, we are not able to format equations at this time.

We format manuscripts according to the journal’s guidelines for submission. Some journals require a different format for submission to allow for easier peer review. If the manuscript is accepted, the journal may typeset and copyedit the manuscript before publication.

Figure Preparation Questions

With Figure Formatting, we provide you with publication ready figure files. Your figures are set to the correct size, resolution and layout to meet the specifications of your chosen journal.

Yes. Our Figure Formatting service formats tables to meet journal submission specifications, which usually require tables to be submitted in a text format. Additionally, our service can format and export your tables as images for use in presentations and posters.

Please provide your tables as editable Excel or Word files.

For images, we will format them to the correct size, resolution and layout to meet the specifications of your chosen journal. For ethical reasons, we are unable to make changes to brightness, contrast, or color balance, and we will not crop the image.

Please provide original image files with the highest resolution available.

In addition to providing you with the required file format required by your chosen journal (usually an EPS file), we’ll also provide a PDF version of your new figure for you to review.

We format the figures according to publication specifications in the author guidelines of your chosen journal. Any new or altered figures that need formatted after acceptance are considered new submissions and must be purchased separately.

To edit your figure after it has been formatted, you must have access to a software that allows you to make changes to the new file type, usually an EPS. For this reason, we strongly recommend sending us the final version of your figure for formatting.

Journal Recommendation Questions

No, when making recommendations, our subject-area experts consider the scope of the journal and the types of articles they frequently publish. Submitting to one of these journals increases the likelihood of your article being accepted. However, article acceptance decisions rest solely with the journal, and we therefore cannot guarantee acceptance.

No, we do not peer review manuscripts. However, our subject-area experts do consider the content of your manuscript in order to recommend the best fit with the scope of the journal and the types of articles they frequently publish. Submission Process Questions

To protect your research and assure the privacy of your personal data, we use the most up-to-date website security features available and our payment system is PCI/VeriSign-enabled.

In addition to maintaining a secure website, we also require all our staff members sign a confidentiality agreement to protect your research.

To determine the word count of your document, we recommend creating a copy of your manuscript and deleting any parts that you do not need us to work on. For example, if you want us to edit a letter to your reviewers, you can delete the reviewers’ comments because those won’t be edited by us. You can also take out any numeric table data, which doesn’t need edited or translated. Next, use the Word Count feature in Microsoft Word to find the new word count. If you are submitting multiple files, add the word counts together to determine the most accurate word count.

If you need help determining your word count, please email us your files and our support staff can assist you.

Turnaround times are listed in business days and do not include weekends or holidays.

Our staff members verify the word count before assigning the manuscript to an editor. If your word count is incorrect, we will adjust it accordingly.

If your word count is shorter than indicated, we will refund the price difference as a credit to your Wiley Editing Services account.

If your word count is over the category you selected, we will contact you for further instructions before proceeding, and the deadline for your manuscript will be reset to begin at the time of your reply.
